Students and Parents/Guardians,
Due to current circumstances, classes have been shifted from classrooms to online. All teachers at GVMS are striving to provide an educational experience that still meets all educational standards and encourages rigor and student-achievement. As a school, we are doing our part to ensure a quality education, despite the abrupt shift in how that education is delivered.
As part of that shift, all courses will be taught through Canvas, with all assignments, announcements, and instruction being led in Canvas. In addition to Canvas being the primary learning system, teachers and students will also be able to communicate through scheduled meetings/conferences in Zoom.
Zoom is an online resource that allows students to ask their teachers any questions through online video conferencing. Included is a link to Zoom and a quick overview of how this system works: Zoom.us. Teacher’s zoom numbers are included at the end of this email.
Below is a daily schedule for time slots in each subject area, but teachers will notify their classes on Canvas to provide a more specific time for specific classes. This will begin March 19th.
- 9-10:00 -English
- 10-10:30 - UtahStudies
- 10:30 - 11:00 - USHistory
Again, teachers will have that full time slot designated for conferences, but each teacher will notify students through Canvas what the actual start time will be for each class. Students will need to check Canvas for their class start time on Zoom. This is an optional resource available to students who need additional help from their teachers.
As usual, students will also have the option of simply emailing the teacher directly. This is often best done through Canvas, as well. It is strongly encouraged by all students/parents to adjust notification settings on Canvas to remind students of due dates, new assignments, or any other alerts. These notifications can be sent to emails or cell phones, but keeping up with class changes is vital to student success. Notifications can be set up by logging in to Canvas, clicking on “Account” and “Notifications.” Make sure contact methods are updated, as well. This can be done by clicking “Account” and “Settings.” In the top-right corner of the “Settings” menu, there will be a “Ways to Contact” option. Update this section with the most current information.
As a way to help with internet access, free WiFi will be provided to the clock tower plaza area on Main St. in Gunnison next to the phone company, the Gunnison park near the swimming pool, the Gunnison library, as well as expanded to the parking lot areas at the high school.
School lunch will still be provided and can be picked up on the elementary curbs, as well as the Gunnison Stake Center, Sterling, Centerfield, Mayfield, Fayette and Axtell Church parking
lots starting Wednesday, March 18th. This will be served in a “Drive-thru” style in grab-and-go packages from 11:30PM - 12:30 PM.
Below is a suggested daily schedule to follow with your students:
Students may stop at the school and pick up i-pads, anything from their lockers or musical instruments from 9:00AM - 3:00 PM, March 17th - 18th. Spring Break is scheduled March 23 - 27 - school is closed.
We appreciate your help and support as we strive to help our students succeed during this challenging time. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the school.
