Gunnison Valley Elementary Community Council Minutes

March 2, 2023

3:00 p.m. GVES Faculty Room

In attendance:  Arleen Jensen, Erin Cherry, Cheltzey Larson, Marci Childs

Attending by Zoom:  Mindy Coates, Heidi Avery   Absent - Elise Bown

1 - Approve minutes from February 9, 2023 - A motion was made by Marci Childs to approve the February minutes.  Seconded by Cheltzey Larson.  All were in favor.

2 - Current spending - Arleen reviewed the current spending with the committee.  She would like to amend the budget to move $5000 from general (originally reserved for iPads) to help cover the cost of textbooks.  $10,000 was sent to the district for iPads.  She would also like to move unused money reserved for Para salaries to the textbook budget.  Other than moving funds from these two budgets all other spending is on track.

3. - Amendment -  A motion was made to give Arleen permission to amend the budget by Cheltzey Larson.  Seconded by Mindy Coates.  All were in favor.

4. - Beverly Taylor Sorensen Art Grant - Arleen would like to apply for a Beverly Taylor Sorensen art grant.  This grant would cover someone to teach fine arts such as art, drama, music or dance.  The biggest problem we have in being successful to receive the grant is the person teaching the classes has to be a certified teacher with an endorsement in some type of fine art. It is also a part time position without benefits.  Arleen is going to explore our options and will proceed with the grant application.

5. - Next year’s plan - The committee gave ideas and came up with next year's Trustlands plan.   The committee felt good about our goals and action plan steps.  One item that was noted is our measurement for Acadience in K-5 reading and math will be based on composite scores not growth. A draft will be presented at next month’s meeting for approval.

6. - Review wellness plan - The committee reviewed our wellness plan.  There were no concerns at this time.

7. - Parent Teacher Conferences - Parent Conferences were held February 21 & 22.  We had good attendance from our parents.  Teachers work really hard at making contact with each of their students' parents to let them know how their child is progressing.  Feedback on the conference was good.  Parents liked that there were more opportunities to attend after work hours.  Parents also liked that the conferences were scheduled during a normal school break.  Next year's spring schedule will most likely be similar.

8. - May Day - May day is scheduled for May 19 at 9:30 am at the high school gymnasium.  It will also be broadcast live by teamhive.live.

9. - Questions and concerns - There were no questions or concerns at this time.  The committee did discuss some ideas to help improve reading with our children in their homes.  We would like to encourage parents to spend more time reading with their children at home.  A number of different ideas were discussed to support this idea.

Members of the committee that were present signed the council signature form.  The members attending by zoom were asked to stop by the school to sign the form.

10.  Our meeting was adjourned at 4:10 pm.  Our next meeting will be held on APril 6, 2023 at 3 pm.
