The Board recognizes that employees of South Sanpete School District have the same fundamental civic responsibilities and privileges as other citizens, among these are campaigning for an elective public office and holding an elective or appointive public office.

Any employee who intends to campaign for an elective public office shall notify the Superintendent in writing at the earliest possible moment of the office in which he or she intends to seek, together with the decision as to whether he or she wishes to continue employment and under what terms and conditions.

Schools may not be used as a platform or venue by employees, community members, or outside agencies to conduct or participate in political activities, e.g., campaigning, petitioning, or serving as a medium for personal, group, or community entities to support a campaign, cause, belief, etc.

Any exception to this would need prior approval by the Board. In connection with these campaigning activities, no employee shall use school facilities, equipment, or supplies, nor shall the employee discuss the campaign with school personnel during the workday; nor shall the employee use any time during the working day for campaigning purposes.

As situations occur, the Superintendent will meet with and discuss these matters with the employee involved, and will present a proposed solution to the Board for consideration. The essential element to be determined by the Board is whether the activities proposed by the employee are consistent with his or her services to the district and the best interests of education.

The Board shall determine the terms and conditions under which the employee may continue his or her employment if he or she seeks or holds such elective office.
