The South Sanpete Board of Education believes that the acquisition of skills, which lead to satisfactory achievement in school, is subject to the principle of developmental readiness.  This readiness is a potential only, requiring opportunity, adequate motivation, and suitable training if its possibilities are to be realized, but without the potential no teaching procedure can hope to be successful.

The Board believes that readiness for learning follows a discernible sequence and that, although the interval between birth and the emergence of a readiness for a particular kind of learning may vary somewhat from individual to individual for the general run of children, the time schedule of this sequence is sufficiently uniform to permit teaching to be directed to groups of children.

To ignore or to be indifferent to readiness is to risk premature stimulation or exposure to learning experiences which research has shown can result in artificial achievement which may cause confusion or partial learning; may have a detrimental effect on the child's personality and result in emotional blocking or apathy; or may produce permanently negative effects.

Therefore, children who reside in Utah and in the South Sanpete School District and have reached the age of five (5) years on or before September 1 will be admitted to kindergarten, and a child who has reached the age of six (6) years on or before September 1 shall be admitted to first grade.

Students transferring from outside the District shall be enrolled at the level in which they were enrolled before transferring.

Also, in accordance with the “Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children,” a local school board shall enroll a military child who is not five years of age on or before September 1 of the year in which admission is sought if the military child was previously enrolled and attended a public school in kindergarten or a higher grade as a resident in another state.
