Served February 4, 1943 - April 1946

December 1942 Keith answered the call to serve his country.  On February 4, 1943 at the age of 19 years, 9 months, and 25 days he reported for service at the Manti Court House to join the big army of our country.  On February 12 he left for Fort Douglas and was sent to Camp Maxey, Texas.  He was placed in the Chemical Division on February 16.

A short time later on March 9th he was assigned to the headquarters 3rd Army Special Troops.  There he had to daily check all equipment of the people going over seas.  Once it was so cold that he had to go out with a few others and start up the equipment and keep it going so if they needed it, it would be all warmed up and running.

While he was in the service he had reached all his requirements to become an Eagle Scout.  In June he was on furlough and was home and had the great honor of his father giving him his Eagle Scout.

On September 6, 1943 he was given the opportunity to attend an army administration school at Fort Washington, Maryland.  He graduated November 3 from the Adjutant General's School.  He was the youngest student in a graduating class of 400, and was tied with seven others for top honors with a final grade of 97.  He received his diploma from major General Lewis.  Following graduation, Sergeant Andersen was asked to stay and register the new class which was number eight.  He then returned to Camp Maxey.

Only two weeks passed when he was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas.  He remained there only until January 1945 when he left to attend Officer's Candidate School at Camp Lee Virginia.  In May  he was given a pass to go to Washington and witness the funeral of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  That was one thing that he would never forget.

He then was transferred to Camp Beale, California where he was Chief Clerk in the Finance Department.  Here he received the rank of Major.  He remained here until April 1946 when he was given an honorable discharge to return home.

Keith passed away from cancer in 1995.
