Served 1943-1945
The 93rd Battalion of the Seabees was stationed in the South Pacific- Philippine Islands most of the time. Green Island was one of the places he was stationed. It is located between New Britain and New Ireland in the South West Pacific. They had many of the Islanders' help on their construction projects. Many of the projects were located in the jungles of the Southwest Pacific. Most of the time, they didn't know where they were. There weren't many modes of transportation, but the three main ways were by plane, boat or foot. One of the parts that he most liked was the architecture.
Greg was a very talented artist and architect himself. He helped rebuild a church in California. He even made the Christmas card that he sent home for Christmas.
They held a Easter Service for the men in the Seabees. He said "....We had sunrise services on the beach this morning. As we looked at the chaplain delivering his sermon the backround was great beakers near the shore and nothing but the deep blue sea beyond. Airplanes were patrolling overhead, a grim reminder that we are still at war...." ![]() |
I was sorry that I couldn't find out more,
but it is hard when they never really told their story.
I was excited to do this project; but rather discouraged,
because no one knew much about his experiences . . .
