March 1945  - Discharged July 1946

hyattl

He was in the Navy, he was a sea man but then he went into the engineer, fireman squad.  He took basic training in San Diego. On March 1945, finished his training in June of 1945 when he finished he was shipped over seas. He went on the battleship Missouri from San Diego to Hawaiian islands. He was in the Hawaiian island for 7-10 days then they shipped him to Guam.  He was there for a week or two they decided that they had shipped him to the wrong place. So they shipped him back to Marshall islands were he was stationed for about 3 months. Then he got stationed on a destroyer escort  where  he was changed from a seaman to a fireman.

He worked in the engine room on generators and evaporators and different things on the ship. They patrolled around the South West Pacific.  They would go out then they would comeback. Their base was on the Marshall Islands. When he went in he was suppose to be with a detachment for the invasion of  Japan, when they shipped him to Guam instead of the Marshall islands he missed a ship consequently he don't know how long he was there.   He went from there to the Hawaiian Islands then to San Diego. Then he went down the Panama Canal to New York into the ship yards to refill the ship but, what they were doing was preparing it for decommissioning - that is when they take it out of commission to have to put into service in an emergency.

Then he went from New York to Jacksonville, Florida and after 3 months he was discharged in July 1946 that was about the extent of the service he was only in the service for 15 months. He went in as a volunteer for the duration and when they discharged him he had to stay in active reserves for 2 to 3 years and then was discharged from the reserves.

He was never in any of the war. He had nothing to do with the planes like working on them, he only worked on stuff on the ship. The most lasting thing of  the war to him is  that you do a lot of growing up, going  in at age 17 he says that the military isn't like it use to be if you fouled up back then you were in deep trouble.

He wouldn't give anything to do it again he thinks that a lot of the kids need a little military training especially if it was military like back then.  He doesn't like water either he only likes it to drink and to bath in.
