December 1942 - December 1945

Grandpa entered the war in December 1942 and was assigned to the 84th Infantry.  From then on he spent three more years in combat. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Germany. He recieved the Purple Heart for the injuries he recieved in battle. The 84th Infantry Division arrived in England on November 18, with the attack on Geilenkirchen, Germany.  He was discharged on December 9,  1945.

A quote from Calvert Mellor:   "We were directed to fire across the Elbe River. A few days before the war was ending.   A few minutes later the Gerries shot direct fire from their 88`s.  It didn`t take us long to get off the hill." (Berlin was only 19 meters away.)  A memory he has from the war was on Christmas Day, 1944. He had to hide in a barn from enemy soldiers, who searched through the hay that he was hiding in.  Luckily they never found him.

Information from daughter, Sheree Mckean:  Grandpa Cal made many friends with other veterans. He was probably really good friends with other veterans in the valley. He was also very active in the American Legion. Grandpa Cal was also very proud  to be an American. He was also very proud to serve his country. He did carry many memories from his service, some not so good, but he always showed his love for his country. I think the message he would like to send is to always stand for the right ideals and freedoms. Be proud of your country and always respect those that served before you to insure your freedoms
