Memories of the War
Carla Young lived during World War II. She is my grandmother. Everyone calls Carla, Beverly. She is a very nice person, and has a load of personalty. She is 78-years old, but when the war started she was only 18-years old. She was born in 1923. Her maiden name is Lewis. She is the only girl in her family followed by four brothers. Since she had four brothers she became like a tomboy. Beverly's parents were dairy farmers and so Beverly was a milker.
Beverly had a boyfriend in high school that had to go to war. His name was Marion D. Young. He went to the Navy and was in the CB's. Beverly dreaded him going, but she knew he had to go. When the war started she was a senior in high school and was getting close to graduating. She was a very good student, who got A's all the years she was in high school. She was given a scholarship to BYU. She went to school there for two years. After that she worked at a bakery making $35 a week. "That was pretty good money back then", said Beverly. Beverly had no place to stay and since she was working at the bakery, the people let her stay in the bakery. The next day her mother came to the bakery. She was upset at Beverly because Beverly was working at a bakery and had two years of college. Her mother got her a job as a secretary in ZCMI. Beverly did like it better there and thanked her mother for that. But Beverly was getting better money at the Bakery. She earned only $25 as a secretary in ZCMI. She worked in Salt Lake and she stayed as a secretary for two years.
Beverly wrote letters to Marian D. Young in the Navy CB's. He came home on leave once and together Beverly and Marian went on a train to Pueblo, New Mexico. The next day they were engaged! They had to make a great sacrifice to be together. Still Beverly and Marian are married and are very happy and healthy.
