How old were you? I was nineteen years old. Were you married at the time? No, I was not.
Could you write letters to home? Yes. We also received letters from home every once and a while.
What years did you serve? I served from 1942-1946, so about two years.
In what part of the military did you serve? I served in the U.S. Navy.
Where did you train? I trained in Farragut, Idaho.
Did you have any special assignments? Me and a few other guys were assigned to keep the bathroom clean and fix things that broke, so you might say we were the plumbers.(The ship fitters)
Did you ever get hurt? No, but we came close a couple of times.
What kinds of things did you eat? Well after the fairly decent food was gone all we had left was beans and baloney.
Do you have any stories you want to share? Yes. We had fired all night at our first island, the Marshall Island. We then moved on to Japan. In Japan a fifteen year old boy veered off and missed us. Fortunately we did not get bombed. After Japan we then went to the Philippines. In the Philippines we hit a reed plant. They then hit our IC room. Fifteen men and one officer were killed. We were under the direction of Admiral Hawsey. We decided that coming home was the best, we had forty-two days to repair and then ten days to get back to the island.
