Purpose
The South Sanpete School District recognizes that family engagement is essential to the academic success of students. Parents serve as their children’s first teachers and are key partners in the educational process. The district is committed to fostering strong family-school partnerships that support students’ academic achievement and well-being.
Parent and Family Involvement in Policy Development
The district will actively involve parents and family members in the development, review, and annual revision of both district and school-level Family Engagement Policies.
Key Actions:
- A parent representative from each Title I school, in collaboration with the school’s principal, will be invited to participate in the creation and annual review of the district Family Engagement Policy.
- Parents will have opportunities to attend meetings, review drafts, and provide input to ensure the policy reflects their perspectives and community needs.
- Schools will actively solicit parent and family feedback through meetings, surveys, and ongoing communication to inform updates to the policy.
Clear and Accessible Communication
The district is committed to communicating the Family Engagement Policy in a clear, accessible manner to all families.
Key Actions:
- The policy will be distributed at the beginning of each school year and made available both in print and electronically on school websites.
- The policy will be provided, when feasible, in languages that families can understand, using plain, jargon-free language.
- Schools will also ensure the policy is available at parent-teacher conferences and Title I annual meetings.
Building Educator and Staff Capacity for Parent Support
The district will educate and support teachers, principals, specialized instructional support personnel, and other staff members on the importance of family engagement and its impact on student success.
Key Actions:
- Annual professional development will be provided on effective strategies for building meaningful, two-way communication with families and fostering inclusive engagement.
- Parents and family members will be invited to contribute to this training by sharing their experiences, suggestions, and cultural insights.
- Professional learning will focus on building trust, recognizing family strengths, and developing collaborative partnerships to support student achievement.
Monitoring the Content and Effectiveness of Family Engagement
The district will evaluate the content and effectiveness of its Family Engagement Policy and activities on an ongoing basis.
Key Actions:
- Title I principals, teachers, and parents will provide feedback annually through surveys and focus groups to assess the effectiveness of current engagement strategies.
- The district will analyze the feedback, summarize findings, and use them to guide improvements in family engagement efforts.
- Results and action plans based on the evaluation will be shared with stakeholders at the beginning of each school year.
District Support and Coordination
The district will provide coordination and technical assistance to promote quality family engagement efforts across schools.
Key Actions:
- The district will align parent engagement efforts across various programs and funding sources, including Title I, Special Education, and state initiatives.
- Regular reports will be presented at district leadership meetings to ensure coordination and efficient use of resources.
- Technical assistance will be provided to schools to help them develop and implement strong, customized Family Engagement Policies.
Building School and Parent Capacity
The district and its schools will enhance the capacity of both parents and school staff through the following strategies:
Key Actions:
- Help parents understand state and local academic standards, assessments, and effective ways to support their children’s learning at home.
- Provide training and materials to assist parents in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and technology.
- Encourage ongoing, two-way communication between families and educators to support student achievement.
- Facilitate partnerships with early learning programs, after-school initiatives, and other community services to enhance family engagement across settings.
Ongoing Parent Input and School-Based Engagement
The district and schools will ensure continuous and meaningful parent input through flexible meeting times, surveys, and direct communication.
Key Actions:
- Title I schools will hold an annual meeting to review Title I information, school goals, and engagement opportunities.
- Each school will develop a School-Parent Compact and Family Engagement Policy, outlining strategies to strengthen the home-school connection. This compact will be available on the school website and provided to parents during the annual Title I meeting.
